Wildlife Alliance’s mission is to combat deforestation, wildlife extinction and poverty through innovative partnerships with local communities and governments. We protect the Cardamom Rainforest Landscape in Cambodia, offer environmental education and livelihood opportunities for local people, combat the illegal wildlife trade, and provide care for rescued wildlife. Every year, our mobile wildlife law enforcement team and forest rangers rescue thousands of animals from the illegal wildlife trade. Animals whose age or condition makes them unsuitable for immediate release are transported to the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre for rehabilitation by our Care for Rescued Wildlife Program. Set within a 2,300 hectare protected forest, the Centre includes a Veterinary Department, Quarantine section for new arrivals, and a Nursery where baby animals receive round-the-clock care. Appropriate socialization with members of the same species and enrichment opportunities are provided within more than 200 large enclosures to stimulate animals and encourage natural behavior, helping them to recover from being trafficked. In recent years, an average of over 1,600 newly rescued animals from more than 100 species arrived annually and about 80% were able to be released after a period of care. Animals deemed ready for life in the wild are released into appropriate habitat within the Phnom Tamao Protected Forest, the Cardamom Rainforest, or the ancient forests of the Angkor Archeological Park. Those with permanent physical or psychological injuries, or which cannot be safely released due to lack of sufficiently protected habitat, receive lifelong care and a permanent home at the Centre.
